About
AIREC is a peace-building and environmental organization dedicated to protecting the planet through sustainable practices and empowering local and indigenous communities. We foster peace, dialogue, and fairness by helping communities resolve disputes in ways that honor cultural traditions, promote mutual understanding, and create lasting, just solutions—strengthening social cohesion and sustainable development.
Our Vision
We envision a future where the rights of local communities, especially indigenous peoples, are fully respected and protected, and where environmental conservation flourishes through the synergy of indigenous wisdom and sustainable scientific practices.
Our Mission
AIREC defends local and indigenous rights and promotes community-led conservation, climate action, and sustainable development. We empower communities through legal advocacy, alternative dispute resolution, and capacity-building to protect their lands, cultural heritage, and ecosystems. By fostering partnerships, advancing policy innovation, and integrating traditional knowledge into environmental governance, we ensure indigenous voices shape decisions impacting their rights and the natural world.
Our Strategic Priorities
AIREC strives for a world where local communities are recognized as the rightful stewards of our planet’s ecosystems, leading the way in fostering a harmonious balance between humanity and nature through the following strategic approaches:
- Legal Support and Advocacy: We provide legal assistance to indigenous communities to defend their rights, particularly in cases involving land claims, resource extraction, environmental violations, and other threats to their sovereignty. Through litigation, policy advocacy, and legal education, we help communities navigate complex legal systems to secure their land tenure and protect their traditional territories.
- Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding: We promote peace as a foundation for progress by advocating for alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms that empower indigenous communities to resolve conflicts in a fair, culturally appropriate, and non-adversarial manner. Through mediation, dialogue facilitation, and traditional dispute resolution practices, we help prevent and address conflicts over land, natural resources, and environmental policies thereby strengthening community resilience and social cohesion.
- Environmental Conservation: We advocate for policies and initiatives that safeguard critical ecosystems, promote biodiversity, and address climate change. Recognizing the invaluable role of indigenous peoples as stewards of the environment, we support their leadership in conservation efforts, from protecting forests and water sources to restoring degraded landscapes.
- Community and Economic Empowerment: We equip indigenous communities with the tools, training, and resources needed for advocacy, cultural preservation, and climate resilience. Through market systems approaches, we support sustainable livelihood programs, market access initiatives, and capacity-building efforts, we foster economic self-sufficiency and community-driven development.
- Partnership and Collaboration: We foster partnerships with governments, NGOs, academic institutions, and indigenous leaders to ensure that environmental policies and conservation initiatives are fair, inclusive, and respect indigenous sovereignty. Through collaborative engagement, we advocate for policies that integrate indigenous knowledge systems, promote sustainable resource management, and create equitable governance structures for land and natural resources.
- Research and Policy Innovation: We conduct research and develop innovative policy solutions that highlight the vital contributions of indigenous knowledge to environmental conservation and sustainability. By bridging traditional ecological knowledge with scientific research, we advocate for evidence-based policies that recognize indigenous stewardship as a key pillar of global environmental efforts.
By advancing these strategic priorities, AIREC remains committed to defending indigenous rights, fostering sustainable conservation, promoting peaceful conflict resolution, and empowering communities to shape their own futures.
AIREC believes that the path to a sustainable and just future lie in recognizing and supporting indigenous leadership in environmental conservation, striving for a harmonious balance between human rights and the protection of nature.
